On the Microsoft side, mid-sized businesses are typically juggling Windows Server licenses, Client Access Licenses (CALs), SQL Server fees, Active Directory overhead, and whatever Microsoft 365 tier their CEO decided they needed after watching a Teams demo. According to data published by Forrester and independently corroborated by several open-source advocacy groups, a company running 50 Windows servers can expect to spend anywhere from $180,000 to $400,000 annually just on licensing — before you account for hardware refresh cycles that Microsoft's newer OS requirements tend to accelerate.

Fair question. The honest answer is inertia, and inertia is expensive. Microsoft has spent decades making Windows feel like the default, the safe choice, the thing nobody gets fired for choosing. Breaking that psychological grip takes either a visionary IT leader, a CFO who's read the TCO reports, or — increasingly — a Microsoft licensing audit that arrives at exactly the wrong moment.
